Frequently asked questions
Practical answers about booking, tickets, stations, luggage, family travel and changes.
Booking and payment
Is JpRail.net a railway operator?
JpRail.net is an independent train ticket booking service. We provide booking information and support for orders placed on this site. The railway operates the trains and sets the travel rules. For a booking made with another seller, contact that seller for ticket access, changes or refunds.
When is my seat confirmed?
Availability and the final fare are rechecked when you create an order. A reserved seat is confirmed when the ticket is issued; seat preferences are requests until then.
Do I need to enter passenger names?
Supported bookings currently use adult and child counts only. If a specific product requires identity details, the checkout page will show those fields.
How far in advance can I book?
The available booking window depends on the route and ticket product. Use the dates currently enabled in search and check popular holiday periods early.
What does the displayed price include?
The search price is the total for the adult and child counts you selected and the displayed seat option. Review the currency, order total and any listed charges before paying. Prices through an independent booking service can differ from railway-direct prices; availability and the final amount are rechecked when the order is created.
Is my ticket reserved or unreserved?
Search results identify the available seat type. A reserved ticket assigns a train and seat; an unreserved option does not guarantee a particular seat.
Can my group sit together or request a window seat?
You can submit seating preferences, but adjacent, window, aisle and Mt. Fuji-side seats remain requests until ticketing is complete.
My payment status is unclear. Should I pay again?
Check your booking status before making another payment. A bank notification alone does not confirm ticket issuance. If you see a charge but the booking still shows payment pending, contact support with your booking number and payment time. Do not send full card details or verification codes.
Tickets and boarding
How will my ticket be delivered?
Once your ticket has been issued, check your booking email and secure order for the ticket and its boarding or collection instructions. Payment confirmation is a separate stage. If the ticket is missing, check spam and the order status; contact support with your booking number and departure time if you need help.
Can every Shinkansen gate scan a QR code?
The accepted boarding method depends on your ticket. Some QR codes are used at compatible gates; others are used to collect a ticket first. Read the instructions supplied with your issued ticket and allow extra time if collection is required. A booking number or payment receipt alone is not a boarding ticket.
Do I need to print my ticket?
Follow the instructions issued with the booking. Even when mobile use is supported, save an offline copy and keep your phone charged.
How early should I arrive at the station?
First-time visitors should allow about 30 minutes at a large or unfamiliar station, with more time for transfers or large luggage. Use the live station display for the final platform.
Can I use another station in the same city?
Do not assume so. Tokyo, Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama are different stops, and Osaka Station is not Shin-Osaka. Use the station shown on the ticket.
Luggage and families
What counts as oversized luggage?
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, bags measuring over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in total generally require a seat with a designated oversized-baggage arrangement. Add length, width and height, including wheels and handles. Request the arrangement with an eligible fare and check the ticketing confirmation. Other lines and special items may have different rules.
How do child and infant tickets work?
Common JR rules use child fares for ages 6–11. A younger child may need a child ticket for a separate reserved seat or when the free accompanying allowance does not apply.
Changes and disruptions
What happens if I miss my train?
Ask station staff and contact booking support immediately. Whether another train can be used depends on the exact ticket product; it cannot be guaranteed in advance.
How do changes and refunds work?
Open your booking to view the available change or refund request options. A quote checks the ticket rules, fees and deadline for your order; submitting a request does not confirm a change or refund. If no option is available, contact support as early as possible. Deadlines use local time at the departure station.
What should I do if a train is cancelled or severely delayed?
Follow the railway operator and station instructions and keep your ticket. Refund or alternative-travel eligibility depends on operator confirmation and the ticket rules.
Stations and IC cards
Can I use Suica, PASMO or ICOCA for every Shinkansen?
No. Local IC-card travel does not automatically include a Shinkansen or limited-express ticket. Some services allow a valid reservation to be linked to a registered IC card.
